Morgan Rogers says Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso was a major factor in his decision to complete a record-breaking move from Aston Villa, citing the Spaniard’s vision and football philosophy as key influences.
Chelsea signed the England international in a deal reportedly worth £117 million, making him the club’s most expensive signing and the highest-priced British player in football history. He has signed a contract that runs until 2033.
Speaking after completing the transfer, Rogers said his conversations with Alonso convinced him that Chelsea was the right place to continue his development, adding that the manager’s style of play aligns with his ambitions and would allow him to express himself on the pitch.
The winger also highlighted the opportunity to reunite with close friend Cole Palmer, revealing they had often discussed playing together again. Rogers said Palmer remained in regular contact throughout the transfer negotiations.
Rogers joins Chelsea after an impressive spell at Aston Villa under Unai Emery, where his performances earned him a place in England’s 2026 FIFA World Cup squad. Chelsea believe he will play a key role in Alonso’s plans as the club targets major honours.
