Political commentator Tucker Carlson has warned that the killing of Iran’s senior religious leader would trigger a long-term conflict with consequences lasting for generations.
According to a video posted on Stephen A. Smith’s YouTube channel on Thursday, July 23, 2026, Carlson described Iran’s 87-year-old supreme religious leader as a figure comparable to a pope in Shia Islam, arguing that his death would have profound symbolic and political implications.
“Once you kill the 87-year-old religious leader of their religion, once you murder the Shiite Pope, which we did, you ensure that there is a generational conflict that our grandkids are going to have to deal with,” Carlson said.
He argued that such an outcome would not be resolved through short-term diplomacy and suggested that the United States had historically avoided major terrorist attacks on its own soil partly because of its previous approach to foreign conflicts.
Carlson told Stephen A. Smith that decisions made during the war reflected a focus on immediate military objectives without fully considering their long-term consequences, warning that the effects could extend well beyond the current conflict.
