The Ondo State Police Command has launched an investigation to identify and apprehend officers captured in a viral video allegedly threatening a traveller with arrest and making remarks widely condemned as discriminatory.
According to Daily Post on Friday, July 24, 2026, the incident involved a Nigerian traveller who had recently returned from the United Kingdom. He alleged that officers stopped him at a checkpoint in Ondo State and attempted to extort money from him.
In the viral footage, one officer was heard saying he would have slapped and detained the traveller if he had been Igbo, prompting widespread criticism over alleged ethnic profiling and police misconduct.
Reacting to the incident, the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said the police had commenced a thorough investigation and were working to identify all officers involved.
“The Ondo State Police Command has noted with serious concern the viral video making rounds on social media. The Command does not condone any form of unprofessional conduct by its personnel and has therefore commenced a thorough investigation into the incident,” Jimoh said.
He urged the traveller to contact the Police Public Relations Department to assist investigators, assuring the public that any officer found culpable would face appropriate disciplinary action in line with police procedures.
