Nigerian comedian Osama Akpunonu, popularly known as Osama, has opened up about the devastating loss of his wife, revealing that he struggled to accept her death after she passed away from meningitis at the age of 28, just 10 months into their marriage.
Osama shared the emotional account during an interview with Nedu Wazobia on The Clarity Zone Podcast, where he reflected on one of the most painful periods of his life.
According to the comedian, he and his wife were married on May 15, 2021, before tragedy struck less than a year later.
He said his wife died on March 26, 2022, after battling meningitis.
Recalling the experience, Osama said the loss was so overwhelming that he found it difficult to believe she had actually died. He described the period as a “second phase” of his life, marked by disbelief and emotional shock.
The comedian said he accompanied his wife’s body to the mortuary because he continued to hope there had been a mistake and that she was still alive.
He recounted asking a mortuary worker to poke her body with a knife in an attempt to confirm that she had not merely fainted.
Speaking during the interview, Osama said, “If my late wife can die at the age of 28, then who am I? I was married for 10 months. I married on May 15, 2021, and my wife died on March 26, 2022. She had meningitis.”
He continued, “I told people I had a second phase of life when I did not agree that my wife was dead. I followed her body to the mortuary. I told a guy to poke her with a knife to see if she had only fainted.”
Osama’s remarks highlight the profound emotional impact of grief and the difficulty some people experience in accepting the sudden death of a loved one.
During the podcast, he reflected on how the tragedy changed his outlook on life, describing the experience as one that forced him to confront the fragility of life at a young age.
