Former Chelsea defender William Gallas has urged his former club to pursue the signing of England international John Stones following the defender’s departure from Manchester City, amid reported interest from Premier League rivals Arsenal.
According to a report by Metro published on Friday, July 24, 2026, Gallas believes Chelsea should move quickly to secure the experienced centre-back, arguing that his leadership, experience, and winning mentality would make him a valuable addition to the squad.
Stones became available after leaving Manchester City at the end of last season, bringing to an end a successful 10-year spell at the Etihad Stadium. The England international joined City from Everton in 2016 in a transfer worth £50 million and went on to establish himself as one of the Premier League’s most accomplished defenders.
During his decade at Manchester City, Stones played a key role in the club’s domestic and European success, helping the team win multiple Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League. His performances also cemented his place in the England national team, where he has remained one of the country’s most experienced defenders.
Although injuries affected his final season with Manchester City, Stones continued to feature on the international stage. He started three matches for England at the 2026 FIFA World Cup under head coach Thomas Tuchel, contributing to the team’s run to the semi-finals.
Following his departure from City, Stones has reportedly attracted interest from several clubs, including Chelsea and Arsenal.

“Some people are surprised with Chelsea’s links to John Stones. I don’t understand how they can be surprised. Chelsea have got to speak with John Stones. Of course they have to go to get him. They won’t have to pay a lot of money because he’s a free agent,” Gallas said.
The former France international highlighted Stones’ wealth of experience and decorated career, describing him as a player capable of making an immediate impact at Stamford Bridge.
“He has got everything. He has got experience. He has already won the Premier League. He won the Champions League,” Gallas added.
