U.S. President Donald Trump has thanked Morocco’s King Mohammed VI after the North African nation named a major highway in his honor, describing the gesture as a “great honour” and expressing hope to travel the route soon.
According to Anadolu Agency, Trump shared his appreciation on Truth Social on Sunday, alongside a video of the newly named President Donald J. Trump Highway, which runs from Tiznit to Dakhla in Morocco’s southern provinces.
“Thank you to Highly Respected Mohammed VI, the King of Morocco, such a great honour,” Trump wrote, adding, “I look forward to travelling the entire length of this great highway someday, hopefully soon.”
The 1,055-kilometre (655-mile) expressway, completed in January 2025 after construction began in 2015, cost an estimated 10 billion Moroccan dirhams. It connects Tiznit to Dakhla and is expected to improve road safety, shorten travel times, boost trade, and enhance access to the Dakhla Atlantic Port.
The naming reflects the longstanding relationship between the United States and Morocco, which became the first country to recognize U.S. independence in 1777. During Trump’s first term, Washington recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara in 2020 as part of the Abraham Accords, though the territory’s status remains disputed between Morocco and the Polisario Front despite ongoing international mediation.
