Political analyst and public affairs commentator Professor Okey Ikechukwu has challenged claims that Major General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, Nigeria’s first military Head of State, relied solely on officers from his ethnic group.
Speaking during an interview on Arise News on Thursday, July 30, 2026, as part of the programme 60 Years Later: Remembering Aguiyi Ironsi, Ikechukwu said Ironsi’s leadership reflected a level of ethnic inclusiveness often overlooked in historical accounts.
He cited the late General Murtala Muhammed as one of Ironsi’s closest and most trusted aides, arguing that this adds important context to the July 1966 counter-coup in which Ironsi was assassinated.
“Look at the people around him—many weren’t from his ethnic background. Murtala was his right-hand man, yet it was members of that same circle who came together and killed him,” Ikechukwu said.
He maintained that Ironsi’s downfall should be understood within a broader historical context rather than viewed solely through an ethnic lens, arguing that the military dynamics of the period were complex and that reducing the crisis to ethnicity oversimplifies the realities of the era.
