Archbishop Emeritus of the Catholic Diocese of Abuja, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, has disclosed that Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke said he would not have attended the pre-election peace accord signing if not for his respect for members of the National Peace Committee.
Speaking on Arise TV, Onaiyekan recalled that the committee visited the Government House in Osogbo shortly after arriving in the state.
“As we landed in Osogbo, we went straight to the Government House to pay our respects, a courtesy call to the governor. And the governor right away fired the salvos. He told us very bluntly, ‘I would not have gone for that charade of the signing of a peace accord if it was not because of the great respect I have for you people in the National Peace Committee. Because you came for it, I will be there,'” Onaiyekan said.
According to him, Adeleke accused the ruling APC of interfering with his party’s activities in the state, claiming the actions threatened its ability to operate ahead of the election.
Onaiyekan added that when invited to give his closing remarks at the peace accord event, the governor presented a five-page document detailing allegations of political intimidation against his party over the past several months.
