Former Manchester United and France striker Louis Saha says he has slightly more respect for Cristiano Ronaldo than Lionel Messi, citing the Portugal captain’s mentality, work ethic and commitment to maintaining elite performance.
According to a GOAL report published on Friday, July 3, 2026, Saha praised Ronaldo’s physical condition, saying the veteran forward continues to perform at the highest level through relentless dedication to fitness. “He’s playing like a robot,” Saha said, while acknowledging that age will eventually catch up with him.
Saha contrasted Ronaldo’s approach with that of Argentina captain Lionel Messi, arguing that Messi has adapted by relying more on his teammates, whereas Ronaldo continues to shoulder responsibility and demand the highest standards from himself.
“I don’t think that even Messi has this kind of brain because Messi understands that he can’t run as much as Cristiano,” Saha said, adding that Ronaldo’s willingness to keep working without expecting special treatment reflects “a big mentality that I respect.”
Both players have impressed at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Ronaldo scoring three goals in four appearances for Portugal and Messi netting seven goals in his first four matches for Argentina.
