A 38-year-old mother of 10, Barira Alhassan, has alleged that one of her kidneys was removed during a Caesarean section at Gombe State Specialist Hospital, a claim the hospital denies.
According to Daily Trust on Saturday, July 4, 2026, the hospital maintains that available medical evidence indicates Alhassan may have been born with only one kidney. Her family has called for an independent investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the case.
Alhassan said she was admitted to the hospital on April 8, 2026, after developing complications during labour. Doctors reportedly recommended an emergency Caesarean section, which she said was successful and resulted in the birth of her baby.
She alleged that her health deteriorated after she was discharged, with symptoms including persistent vomiting, severe abdominal pain, body swelling and intense pain while urinating.
“After the operation, I became seriously ill. I was vomiting, my stomach was hurting, my body became swollen and I felt severe pain whenever I wanted to urinate,” she said.
The allegations have sparked public concern in Gombe State, with her relatives urging authorities to conduct a transparent and comprehensive investigation into the matter.
