Family members, friends, and colleagues of late Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo gathered in his hometown in Abia State on Thursday to bid him a final farewell as he was laid to rest at his family compound.
The 40-year-old actor, who was battling kidney cancer, passed away in May 2026 while receiving medical care at a hospital in Lagos.
His death brought an end to a successful career that saw him become one of the most admired actors in Nigeria’s movie industry.
Before the burial, loved ones held a service of songs on June 10 at The Monarch Event Centre in Lekki, Lagos, where friends, fans, and colleagues came together to celebrate his life and achievements.
A wake-keep was later organised at the Ekubo family residence in Aziukwu Ujari Village, Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia State.
The gathering marked the beginning of the final burial rites as residents and visitors mourned the actor’s passing.
On June 18, the quiet village was filled with emotion as Alexx Ekubo’s remains arrived in his hometown.
Many people, including relatives, members of the entertainment industry, close friends, and admirers, turned up to pay their last respects.
The atmosphere was solemn as a convoy carrying his casket made its way to his father’s home, where he was laid to rest according to family traditions.
Most of the mourners wore white outfits, a symbol of peace and a celebration of a life many described as inspiring, generous, and full of love.
Several notable figures from the Nigerian entertainment industry attended the burial ceremony.
Among them were IK Ogbonna, Ini Edo, Omoni Oboli, Obi Cubana, Bolaji Ogunmola, Bimbo Ademoye, Nancy Isime, and Venita Akpofure, all of whom came to support the grieving family.
Emotions ran high throughout the ceremony, with many mourners unable to hold back their tears.
Family members and close friends openly expressed their grief as they said their final goodbyes.
Fondly called “Chief Ikuku,” Alexx Ekubo built a successful career in entertainment after emerging as the first runner-up in the 2010 Mr. Nigeria competition.
Over the years, he became one of Nollywood’s most recognisable actors and earned fans across Nigeria and other African countries.
Beyond his work in film, he was widely respected for his sense of style, charitable activities, and commitment to empowering young people.
His legacy, many believe, will continue to live on through his work and the lives he touched.
