Ngozi Ishiwu-Obodo, widow of late police inspector Dr. Ikechukwu Obodo, has recounted the final moments before learning of her husband’s death in a road accident.
In an interview with The PUNCH, Ngozi, an indigene of Opi in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State, said her husband, who hailed from Ologo in Uzo-Uwani LGA, died after leaving home for his duty station on Sunday, July 5.
She said he departed around 7 p.m. after spending the weekend with the family and promised they would keep in touch during the journey. Before the trip, he reminded her to buy items needed for their son’s graduation photographs, requested her bank details, and transferred the money at about 7:55 p.m.
“Around 9 p.m., I saw his call come through. I assumed he was calling to say he’d arrived safely. I answered right away, but it wasn’t him—it was someone else,” she said.
According to Ngozi, the caller informed her that her husband had been involved in an accident. She pleaded with those at the scene to take him to a hospital before contacting her brother, who works at Park Lane Hospital in Uwani, and rushing to the crash site with the help of a neighbour.
She said she was later informed that her husband had died.
