Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has called for an investigation into the 2026 Federal Government budget over allegations of duplicated and overlapping allocations exceeding ₦210 billion.
According to a Daily Post report published on Saturday, July 18, 2026, Atiku made the demand in a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu. He alleged that the reported budget irregularities reflected poor management of public funds and raised concerns about transparency and accountability.
Atiku argued that the alleged duplications come at a time when Nigerians are grappling with high inflation, unemployment, and rising living costs. He also claimed that some projects were assigned to agencies outside their statutory responsibilities, describing the practice as part of a broader pattern of questionable budgeting.
The former vice president further linked the controversy to the removal of fuel subsidy, contending that the policy has worsened economic hardship. He questioned the government’s explanation of subsidy payments, citing financial records from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) which he said indicated continued energy-related spending.
He urged the Federal Government to investigate the alleged irregularities, provide explanations to the public, and strengthen accountability in the management of public resources.
