Abia State APC Chairman Chijioke Chukwu has defended President Bola Tinubu’s decision to retain Vice President Kashim Shettima as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election.
According to The PUNCH, Chukwu said there is no political or administrative justification for replacing Shettima, noting that the President and Vice President have maintained a harmonious working relationship since assuming office without internal conflict.
He also argued that retaining Shettima preserves the existing North-South political balance within the APC. Chukwu added that although Tinubu is a Muslim from Southern Nigeria, he has continued to support Christians, making it appropriate to retain a running mate from Northern Nigeria for a second term.
“Tinubu is a Muslim from the South and has been supporting Christians. There is no reason for a new VP. To us, this is a wonderful decision,” Chukwu said.
His comments come amid reactions from political stakeholders following Tinubu’s decision to keep Shettima on the APC’s 2027 presidential ticket.
