Moses Obeka, a resident of Otukpo Nobi in Benue State, has criticised the N5 million relief announced by the state government for victims of a recent attack, describing the support as inadequate given the scale of the losses suffered by the community.
Speaking during an interview on News Central TV on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, Obeka reacted to the assistance announced by the Benue State Deputy Governor, arguing that the amount would provide little relief when shared among affected residents.
According to Obeka, the community recorded eight deaths, 11 injuries and five missing persons during the attack, while many families are struggling to meet medical and burial expenses.
“In this community, we lost about 8 people, 11 injured, 5 missing and they are coming to give us N5 million for the hospital treatment, burial. What are we going to do with N5 million? We will dig the ground and bury our people,” he said.
Obeka maintained that the financial assistance would not adequately cover the treatment of the injured or the burial costs for those who lost their lives. He said residents had expected a more substantial intervention from the state government in light of the casualties recorded during the attack.
