Chelsea’s decision to sell Andrey Santos to Manchester United could have implications beyond the pitch, particularly for teenage winger Estevao Willian.
According to The Chelsea Chronicle, the Blues have agreed a deal worth around £50 million for Santos, ending the Brazilian midfielder’s spell at Stamford Bridge before he established himself under head coach Xabi Alonso.
Estevao, who officially joined Chelsea this summer after completing his time at Palmeiras, previously described Santos as one of his closest friends during an interview with the club’s media. The pair built a strong bond while representing Brazil’s youth national teams, and many expected them to continue playing together at club level.
Santos’ departure means Estevao will begin life in England without a familiar teammate who could have eased his adaptation. While Chelsea remain confident in the youngster’s ability and view him as one of football’s brightest prospects, the club will be hoping he settles quickly.
Chelsea still have a strong South American presence, including Enzo Fernandez, although the Argentine has been linked with a move to Real Madrid. Despite the changes, there is no indication that Estevao is unsettled, and he is expected to play an important role under Alonso during the upcoming season.
