Drake Wins $1m World Cup Bet After Canada Knocks Out South Africa

Canadian rapper Drake has won more than $1 million after Canada defeated South Africa 1-0 in their FIFA World Cup Round of 32 match.

The Toronto-born artist staked $770,000 (over ₦1 billion) on Canada to win, with the wager carrying a potential payout of $1,001,000. Following Canada’s victory, Drake earned a profit of about $231,000.

Before the match, Drake shared the bet slip on Instagram, saying the wager was inspired by a message from South African DJ Black Coffee. “@realblackcoffee was chirping in the DM I had to raise the STAKES,” he wrote.

South Africa’s defeat ended the country’s best-ever FIFA World Cup campaign after reaching the knockout stage for the first time. Bafana Bafana advanced as runners-up in Group A, qualifying ahead of Nigeria, and sealed progression with a 1-0 win over South Korea in a group that also included co-hosts Mexico and Czechia.

Canada secured victory at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles through Stephen Eustáquio’s stoppage-time volley, booking a place in the Round of 16 and marking the country’s first-ever qualification for that stage of the FIFA World Cup. Drake’s successful wager added another high-profile win to his history of public sports betting.
