Former England defender Gary Neville believes Argentina are the only team capable of preventing France from winning the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking during ITV’s tournament coverage, Neville described France as the strongest side remaining in the competition but said Argentina’s unity, experience and mentality make them their biggest threat.
“The only team I can see stopping France right now, because of the mentality, is Argentina. Because of the nastiness and the horribleness and their experience. That’s the only team I can see that’s got the unity right now that I think could stand in front of France,” Neville said.
Neville argued that Argentina’s resilience and ability to perform under pressure give the reigning world champions a decisive edge in knockout football.
France have impressed throughout the tournament with strong performances built on attacking quality, midfield control and defensive solidity, with Kylian Mbappé playing a key role through his goals and assists.
Argentina have also maintained an unbeaten run, carrying the confidence of their 2022 World Cup triumph over France. Neville said their winning mentality could prove decisive if the two sides meet again later in the tournament.
