GMet warns of rainstorms, thunderstorms across southern Ghana

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has issued an afternoon weather forecast warning of developing rainstorms expected to affect large parts of the country, particularly southern Ghana, as cloud build-up increases over the region.

According to the forecast, a rainstorm system moving in from Benin is currently spreading thick cloud cover over southern Ghana, raising the likelihood of widespread rainfall and thunderstorms later in the day.

GMet says coastal areas and nearby inland communities should expect rain accompanied by thunderstorms from the afternoon into the evening.

These areas are likely to experience periods of heavy downpours, reduced visibility, and possible disruptions to outdoor activities.

For the middle belt, transition zones, and northern parts of the country, the agency also predicts rain or thunderstorms developing later in the afternoon and continuing into the night.

Residents in these areas have been advised to remain alert as weather conditions may change rapidly.

The forecast further warns that sea conditions will be rough throughout the period. Fishermen and those planning to travel by water have been strongly advised to exercise caution or avoid going to sea altogether due to the risk of strong winds and turbulent waters.

Gmet weather update for this afternoon

GMet’s update forms part of its routine efforts to provide early warnings and help the public prepare for changing weather patterns, especially during the rainy season when storms can develop quickly and affect several regions at once.

In recent weeks, Ghana has experienced periods of heavy rainfall leading to flooding in parts of Accra and other urban centres.

Meteorologists say such conditions may continue intermittently as moisture systems move across the West African sub-region.

The agency is urging the public to stay updated through official weather bulletins and to take necessary precautions, particularly those in flood-prone areas or involved in outdoor and marine activities.

Authorities also encourage residents to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall and to secure loose items around homes and businesses to reduce the risk of weather-related damage.

GMet says it will continue to monitor the situation and provide further updates as the rainstorm system progresses across the country.
