Security analyst Bulama Bukarti has urged the Federal Government to adopt technology-driven tactics, including drones and enhanced aerial surveillance, to strengthen operations against armed bandits.
Speaking in a video published on the official YouTube channel of Channels Television on Friday, July 3, 2026, Bukarti said bandits are most vulnerable when travelling on motorcycles in small groups to or from attack locations.
“Bandits’ most vulnerable moments are when they climb onto their motorcycles in twos and threes to ride to or from their target locations, which raises the question of whether we can use technology and drones to attack them during those precise periods,” he said.
Bukarti argued that security forces face greater challenges once bandits disperse into dense forests, where difficult terrain limits conventional military operations. He said intercepting the groups before they reach their hideouts would improve the effectiveness of counter-bandit efforts.
The legal practitioner also called for greater investment in intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities, saying unmanned aerial systems could help track, disrupt and engage armed groups before they regroup. He urged the government to build on existing security gains by targeting the logistics networks that sustain bandit operations and equipping the military with modern technology.
