Lionel Messi says he is grateful to God after leading Argentina to a second consecutive FIFA World Cup final following a 2-1 comeback victory over England in the 2026 semi-final.
According to PM News Nigeria, the 39-year-old captain produced a match-winning display, providing assists for both late goals as the defending champions booked a place in Sunday’s final against Spain.
Messi described the occasion as bigger than football, saying the emotion was evident from the national anthems and that everyone in the Argentina camp understood the significance of the match. He also thanked the team’s supporters for their unwavering backing throughout the tournament.
“God is great, and He always has something else, but honestly, I can no longer ask God for more. I am grateful for everything God has given me, whether in my football career or in my personal life,” Messi said.
Looking ahead to the final, Messi added: “It will be God’s will. God knows.”
He also praised his teammates for their resilience, saying their comeback against England reflected unity, determination and hard work. Argentina will face Spain as they aim to become the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to successfully defend the World Cup and win a fourth world title.
