Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Economic Affairs, Tope Fasua, says the living conditions of Nigeria’s poorest citizens are gradually improving, attributing the progress to the administration’s economic reforms.
Speaking on Sunday Politics, Fasua argued that sustainable poverty reduction must begin at the grassroots. He said the Federal Government’s push for local government autonomy and increased monthly allocations to states and local governments is designed to improve service delivery and drive community development.
“The solution to poverty is at the local level, and that’s why the President has advocated for local government autonomy and ensured that the states are a lot more powerful now in terms of the allocation being released monthly,” Fasua said.
He added, “I can tell you that, honestly, for the very poor people in this country, the situation is getting better.”
Fasua maintained that increased funding for subnational governments would improve infrastructure and accelerate development across the country.
His remarks come amid ongoing debate over the impact of the Tinubu administration’s economic reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidies and the liberalisation of the foreign exchange market. While supporters say the measures are necessary for long-term economic stability, critics argue they have contributed to rising inflation and a higher cost of living.
