“I Pleaded With Them I Was Sick, and One of Them Said, ‘It’s That Sickness That Will Kill You'” – Augustine

Purity Augustine, a relative of one of the victims of a recent kidnapping along the Federal Capital Territory (FCT)–Nasarawa border, has recounted her ordeal while in the custody of suspected kidnappers.

Speaking during an interview on Arise News on Thursday, July 2, 2026, Augustine said the abductors forced her and other captives to trek through difficult terrain despite her illness. She recalled that after her husband briefly returned, the kidnappers ordered them to continue toward a hill.

“My husband managed to come back and they now came back to me and we trekked to that hill. I can’t climb the hill because I was sick that period and I pleaded with them that I was sick and one of them told me that it is that sickness that will kill me,” she said.

Augustine alleged that the kidnappers ignored her repeated pleas for compassion and forced her to continue the journey. Her account adds to testimonies from survivors and suspects as police intensify investigations into the activities of the kidnapping syndicate operating around the FCT and neighbouring Nasarawa State. Authorities say efforts to dismantle the network and bring those responsible to justice are ongoing.
