Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential candidate Adewole Adebayo has claimed that he once witnessed Nigerian soldiers and suspected Boko Haram fighters positioned close to each other in Maiduguri without exchanging gunfire.
Speaking in an interview with Nevon HQ, Adebayo said the two groups appeared to be separated by what he described as an “invisible line,” with the suspected insurgents on one side and soldiers on the other.
According to him, the situation gave the impression that there was an understanding between both sides that neither would attack the other unless provoked.
“I have been to part of Maiduguri where they appear to be like friends, where they just draw one invisible line between two of them. You will see the so-called Boko Haram boys there, sometimes they would just be playing around with no exchange of anything,” Adebayo said.
He did not provide evidence to support the claim or specify when the incident occurred. The Nigerian military has consistently maintained that it is actively engaged in operations against Boko Haram and other insurgent groups in the North-East.
