ADC chieftain Dr. Ladan Salihu has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of driving what he described as unnecessary judicial interference in political matters, warning that such actions could undermine Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
Speaking during an interview on Trust TV, Salihu called on the judiciary to perform its constitutional responsibilities without political interference, stressing that political disputes should be resolved in accordance with the law rather than through pressure on the courts.
He argued that the independence of the judiciary is critical to maintaining public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic system. According to him, the frequent involvement of courts in the internal affairs of political parties has raised concerns about the direction of the country’s democracy.
During the interview, Salihu said, “Undue judicial interference is being driven by APC, and it’s time the judiciary was allowed to operate without political pressure.”
He further alleged that some of the legal challenges involving the African Democratic Congress (ADC) were politically motivated.
Salihu maintained that judges should interpret the law based solely on the Constitution, relevant statutes, and the evidence presented before them. He said the judiciary’s credibility depends on its ability to remain impartial, particularly in politically sensitive cases.
According to him, political parties should compete through democratic processes rather than relying on litigation to weaken their opponents. He added that elections and internal party affairs should not become subjects of prolonged courtroom battles driven by political interests.
The ADC chieftain also stated that the party remains committed to respecting court decisions while exercising its legal right to challenge judgments it believes are inconsistent with established constitutional principles. He described judicial review as a legitimate part of the democratic process.
Salihu said preserving judicial independence is in the interest of every political party and all Nigerians, arguing that a judiciary free from external influence strengthens democracy and promotes public trust in the administration of justice.
He added that the ADC would continue to pursue its position through lawful means while encouraging respect for constitutional institutions and resolving disputes within the framework of the law.
Salihu concluded that Nigeria’s democracy would be stronger if the judiciary is allowed to discharge its constitutional responsibilities without political pressure, describing an independent judiciary as essential to protecting the rule of law and ensuring fairness in the country’s political process.
