North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has publicly dismissed a senior military official in what analysts describe as a rare and highly visible anti-corruption move aimed at reinforcing his authority over the country’s armed forces.
According to Anadolu Agency, the public nature of the dismissal departs from North Korea’s usual practice of keeping internal disciplinary actions out of public view. Analysts say the move was intended to send a clear warning to military commanders and senior members of the ruling Workers’ Party.
The development comes as the military assumes a larger role in national development projects, including construction and industrial activities, increasing its influence beyond traditional security responsibilities.
Yang Moo-jin, a professor at the University of North Korean Studies, said the action was designed to strengthen Kim’s control and discourage disloyalty within the military.
“Kim is effectively telling military and party leaders: ‘Don’t even think about it. You are under round-the-clock surveillance,'” Yang said.
Observers say the dismissal underscores Kim’s continued efforts to tighten political discipline, combat corruption and prevent the emergence of rival power centres as the military’s responsibilities continue to expand.
