Media consultant and civil society activist Igho Akeregha has said some Nigerians are concerned that recent political developments under President Bola Tinubu’s administration have weakened the country’s democratic space.
Speaking during an interview on SYMFONI, Akeregha said many citizens believe opposition parties are being weakened, reducing political competition.
“Many Nigerians believe President Tinubu is shrinking the democratic space by weakening opposition political parties,” he said.
Akeregha argued that democracy thrives when all political parties can operate freely without fear or undue pressure. He maintained that a strong opposition is essential for promoting accountability and providing voters with meaningful political alternatives.
He added that public confidence in democracy depends on the perception that every political party has a fair opportunity to participate in the electoral process. According to Akeregha, concerns about attempts to weaken opposition parties should be addressed through greater openness and respect for democratic institutions.
He concluded that protecting democratic institutions is a shared responsibility of both the government and opposition, stressing that stronger political pluralism would enhance public trust in Nigeria’s democracy.
