Emeritus Professor Martin Aghaji, the medical expert who conducted an independent assessment of the health of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu, has reportedly been arrested in Enugu State.
According to Daily Post, human rights lawyer Maxwell Okpara said Aghaji was arrested at his residence in the Independence Layout area of Enugu on Friday. Okpara disclosed the development on Saturday, expressing concern over the professor’s detention.
Aghaji had drawn public attention after producing a medical report on Kanu that reportedly differed from the health assessment earlier presented by the Department of State Services (DSS).
As of the time of the report, authorities had not publicly disclosed the reason for Aghaji’s arrest, and no official statement had been issued by security agencies.
Okpara warned that the arrest could discourage professionals from providing independent expert opinions in sensitive legal cases. He called on the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and other civil society groups to monitor the situation, urging authorities to follow due process and uphold the rule of law.
