Veteran Nollywood actor Bob-Manuel Udokwu has dismissed claims that actors in Nigeria are generally poor because of low pay, arguing that financial challenges are often driven by growing family and personal responsibilities.
According to a report by TheCable on Monday, July 6, 2026, Udokwu said in an interview with Udala FM that Nollywood has created career opportunities and sustainable livelihoods for many actors. While acknowledging that financial struggles exist, he said it is unfair to blame the industry’s pay structure alone.
Udokwu explained that many actors support extended families, maintain multiple homes, and meet other financial obligations that can significantly reduce their earnings. Citing the late John “Mr Ibu” Okafor, he said many people were unaware of the comedian’s numerous financial responsibilities, including having more than two wives, which he argued placed additional pressure on his finances.
He maintained that income should be assessed alongside personal obligations rather than used to judge the industry’s earning potential. Addressing relationships, Udokwu said societal expectations differ for men and women, adding, “A man of 40 will marry a girl of 21 and they’ll become mates. You can hardly reverse it. Forget that there is now a lot of abominations today.”
