I’m writing because I’m confused and hurt, and I need someone to help me see clearly.
I am a 24-year-old girl, a student. I’ve been in a long distance relationship with my boyfriend who is 27. I am based in Abuja and he is in Enugu State. I have been suspecting this guy for a long time but I always told myself maybe I was too paranoid.

Our conversations have become shorter. Even with that, he doesn’t start them, I do and I carry them on my head, and he still is disinterested in the conversations. When he greets me in the morning, that’s all. No checkups until evening when he sends a goodnight.

Some weeks ago, he came to Abuja and visited me. I went through his messages, and he was there begging some girl for sex. The way he texts, slang, everything, it was him. I know it. I took screenshots of the chats and sent them to my phone and deleted the ones in his phone. I made up my mind to hold onto it for a while but I couldn’t so I went ahead to confront him anyway. He said it was his friend who has been chatting with the girl since his phone went missing, bla bla bla.
I’ve asked him several times to just tell me the truth once, but he keeps saying he has already told me everything and doesn’t know what else to say. Deep down I know he’s lying because his friend doesn’t text that way. I know the way my boyfriend talks through text, his words and slangs.
The next morning, he greeted me by my name. No pet name as he usually does. It is actually the first time he has done something like that since we started dating. Because I was so mad at him, I didn’t reply until the evening when I calmed down a bit. The next day he wasn’t checking up on me or trying to fix things.
He was just online the whole time. No effort. Some days after that, he actually started checking up on me but there was a big difference from when we started dating up until then. Whenever I brought up the problem he’d give excuses like “I’m writing exams in the coming days and don’t want distractions. After the exams we can talk.”
But after the exams he didn’t bring it up. I waited, but he didn’t. So I did. I told him I was done and that I had moved on. And he didn’t beg me or get mad, he was just sending sad emojis, asking me whether I was sure of what I was doing. I said yes, we could just be friends, he said okay if that’s what was going to make me happy. The funniest thing is, he still hasn’t tried to tell me the truth or apologize, even though I know it was him.
Now he checks up on me regularly, he is not asking me to come back or talking about the past. Mind you, this is the same person who wasn’t checking up on me when I was hurt.
Also, on my birthday while we were still having issues which was before we broke up, he didn’t even wish me with long paragraphs as couples do. It was just “Happy birthday, wishing you long life and prosperity.” That’s all.
Who Would You Choose, A Rich Man Or A Man Who’s Good In Bed?
I feel like he was already tired of the relationship and was just waiting for the right time. But instead of being honest, he lied and pulled away.
I don’t know what he wants from me now.
Please help me understand this, because it feels unfair.
