Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Communication, has said many Nigerians who relocated to the United Kingdom in search of better opportunities are facing realities that differ from their expectations.
Speaking on The Morayo Show, Bwala said many migrants, including university and postgraduate degree holders, are employed in care homes and other jobs below their qualifications. He argued that relocation does not automatically guarantee career advancement or improved living standards.
“The type of jobs they get there is less than that of a house girl, even as master’s degree holders in an economy that is supposed to provide opportunities,” Bwala said.
He described the experiences of some Nigerian migrants as a form of “modern-day slavery,” saying many professionals accept jobs far below their educational background simply to survive and meet financial obligations.
Bwala urged Nigerians to take a balanced view of migration rather than relying on assumptions or social media impressions. He added that his remarks were based on personal knowledge, stating that he is a resident of the United Kingdom and has firsthand experience of the challenges many Nigerians encounter abroad.
