Argentina defender Cristian Romero has said former England international Gary Neville, not England manager Thomas Tuchel or goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, played an unexpected role in motivating Argentina during its 2-1 World Cup semi-final victory.
According to the Daily Express, Tuchel faced criticism over his tactics and second-half substitutions after England surrendered a lead provided by Anthony Gordon. Argentina completed the comeback with goals from Enzo Fernández in the 85th minute and substitute Lautaro Martínez to book a place in Sunday’s World Cup final against Spain.
Romero said he and fellow defender Lisandro Martínez used Neville’s pre-match comments as motivation. Neville had described the pair as the “best worst centre-back pairing in the world” and predicted England would score at least twice against the defending champions.
“I call them the best worst centre-back pairing in the world because at times they are absolutely extraordinary, and the next instant, they go from the sublime to the ridiculous,” Neville had said.
Following Argentina’s victory, Romero said Neville’s remarks inspired the team as they secured a place in the World Cup final.:::
