The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has condemned the alleged assault on students from Techiman Krobo Nursing Training College by officers of the Ghana Police Service during a protest concerning welfare issues on campus.
The incident occurred on Monday, July 27, 2026, when trainee nurses organised a demonstration to highlight what they referred to as declining living and learning conditions at the college.
In a statement signed by NUGS President Rashid Ibrahim and released on Tuesday, July 28, the union expressed significant concern regarding the incident, noting that the students had resorted to protest after their repeated attempts to engage with the college authorities about their concerns were unsuccessful.
According to NUGS, the demonstration was triggered by ongoing welfare issues, including substandard food, unsanitary conditions on campus, and what they characterised as ineffective communication between the college management and the Students’ Representative Council (SRC).
The union asserted that the students turned to peaceful protest only after exhausting all available internal avenues for dialogue.
In condemning the reported police intervention, NUGS stated that the actions of the officers were unacceptable, emphasising that the 1992 Constitution guarantees every Ghanaian the right to assemble and demonstrate peacefully.
“NUGS strongly condemns the reported assault on these students. The use of force against unarmed students who were peacefully expressing their concerns is unacceptable and has no place in a democratic society,” the statement said.
While recognising the duty of the Ghana Police Service to uphold law and order, the union stressed that officers must carry out their responsibilities professionally and with respect for the rights and dignity of citizens.
Consequently, NUGS has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to initiate a comprehensive and independent investigation into the incident and ensure that any officer found to have acted unlawfully is held accountable.
The union also called on the Ministry of Health and the management of Techiman Krobo Nursing Training College to intervene immediately and ensure that students who sustained injuries receive the necessary medical attention.
It further urged the Ministry of Health and the college authorities to address the welfare issues that triggered the protest, insisting that students deserve a safe, supportive learning environment and responsive leadership.
NUGS reaffirmed its commitment to monitoring developments at the college and engaging all relevant stakeholders until justice is served and lasting solutions are found to the challenges confronting the trainee nurses.
