Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Burna Boy has named former Super Eagles midfielder Austin ‘Jay-Jay’ Okocha as the greatest football player of all time.
While global football debates have been dominated for over a decade by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, the Afrobeats star bypassed both icons during a recent interview with ESPN. Instead, he placed Okocha alongside Brazilian legend Pelé at the pinnacle of the sport.

Reflecting on his choice, Burna Boy stated:
“I will say Jay Jay Okocha. It is between him and Pele. I am not doing that Ronaldo or Messi stuff.”
Renowned for his extraordinary dribbling, creativity, and flair, Okocha represented Nigeria 73 times and scored 14 goals. The former Bolton Wanderers, Fenerbahçe, and Paris Saint-Germain star is widely regarded as one of the most influential tricksters in world football history, having featured across top European leagues including the Bundesliga, Süper Lig, Ligue 1, and the Premier League before his retirement in 2008.
Burna Boy’s comments follow his high-profile involvement in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where his collaborative track “Dai Dai” featuring Shakira broke records by becoming the highest-charting World Cup song on the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 17.
