Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has questioned the club’s reported move for Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos, saying the proposed signing is unlikely to excite supporters.
According to Metro, United have prioritised strengthening their midfield this summer following Casemiro’s departure, having already spent more than £200 million on attacking reinforcements. The club was previously reported to have reached a verbal agreement to sign Atalanta midfielder Ederson for about £34 million plus add-ons.
Reports from The Athletic also claim United have agreed a £50 million deal with Chelsea for 22-year-old Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos. Santos has reportedly agreed personal terms and been cleared to undergo a medical.
Speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football, Scholes questioned why Chelsea would sell a promising young player and argued United need midfielders capable of making an immediate impact rather than long-term investments. He cited Newcastle United’s Bruno Guimaraes and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton as alternatives, while acknowledging Guimaraes may not be the ideal fit and Wharton could be an option at the right price.
Scholes also discussed Marcus Rashford’s potential return after his Barcelona loan spell, saying head coach Michael Carrick could help revive the forward’s career. He urged Rashford to improve his work rate without the ball despite recognising his match-winning ability.
