Former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani has highlighted the political influence of the late Major General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, describing him as a key figure in Nigeria’s democratic history and a mentor to several prominent politicians, including President Bola Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
Speaking during an interview on Creative Lord TV on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, Sani said many Nigerians are familiar with the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua but know little about the legacy of his elder brother.
According to Sani, the late Shehu Musa Yar’Adua played a pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s political landscape by building strong political networks and mentoring emerging leaders who later rose to prominent positions.
“People don’t know the elder brother of Yar’Adua. But President Yar’Adua has an elder brother who was the godfather of Tinubu and godfather of Atiku,” Sani said.
The former senator described the late military officer as one of the country’s most influential political strategists, arguing that his efforts in building alliances, encouraging political participation, and mentoring younger politicians contributed significantly to Nigeria’s democratic development.
Sani said understanding Nigeria’s political evolution requires recognising the contributions of influential figures who worked behind the scenes to strengthen political institutions and prepare future leaders for public service.
He added that while some political leaders receive widespread public recognition, others who helped lay the foundation for their success are often overlooked.
According to Sani, the legacy of the late Shehu Musa Yar’Adua continues to be reflected in the careers of many of the political figures he mentored, making him an important figure in Nigeria’s democratic history.
