Russian President Vladimir Putin has reaffirmed Moscow’s commitment to expanding its economic and military presence in the Arctic, saying Russia’s activities are aimed at protecting national sovereignty and strategic interests rather than threatening other nations.
Speaking to Russian naval personnel in St. Petersburg during Russia’s Navy Day celebrations on Sunday, Putin described the Arctic as vital to the country’s future security, economic growth, and development.
According to Putin, international law supports Russia’s Arctic claims, including its authority over the Northern Sea Route along the country’s northern coastline. “It is a legitimate part of Russia’s sovereign territory,” he said, adding that Moscow welcomes international cooperation provided it respects international law and recognizes Russia’s control of the route.
Putin said Arctic development would remain a national priority, citing infrastructure, energy, and transport projects. Quoting Russian scientist Mikhail Lomonosov, he said, “Russia’s wealth will grow through the Arctic.”
He also defended Russia’s military presence in the region, saying it exists solely to protect national interests and infrastructure. Reaffirming Moscow’s position on the Northern Sea Route, Putin declared, “We will protect our interests… It’s practically under our control. Not practically, completely.”
