Colombia captain James Rodríguez has spoken warmly about his relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo, describing the Portuguese superstar as a role model and one of the most influential figures in football.
Speaking before their clash against Portugal, James recalled the support he received from Ronaldo when he arrived at Real Madrid, revealing that the five-time Ballon d’Or winner played a key role in helping him settle into life at the Spanish club.
According to the Colombian playmaker, Ronaldo was among the first players to welcome him to the dressing room after his high-profile move to Madrid in 2014.
James said their relationship quickly developed beyond football, with Ronaldo even inviting him to his home, helping to build a strong friendship between the two stars.
“When I arrived at Real Madrid, Cristiano was one of the first people to welcome me,” James said. “He invited me to his house, and from there we became very good friends.”
The former Real Madrid midfielder also praised Ronaldo’s professionalism and dedication, highlighting the remarkable physical condition the Portuguese forward continues to maintain despite being in his forties.
James described Ronaldo as an example for players around the world, pointing to his work ethic, discipline and longevity at the highest level of the game.
“He is an example for everyone,” James added. “He is a wonderful person and someone many players can look up to. Just look at the condition he is in at 41 years old.”
The Colombian international said he has immense admiration and respect for Ronaldo, both as a footballer and as a person.
Their friendship was forged during a successful period at Real Madrid, where they played together and helped the club compete for major domestic and European honours.
