The General Superintendent of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry, William Folorunso Kumuyi, has urged Christians not to equate holiness with outward appearance, saying true holiness begins with salvation and a transformed heart.
Speaking during a sermon shared on YouTube, Kumuyi preached from 1 Thessalonians 4:7, reminding believers that “God has not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.” He said biblical holiness is rooted in forgiveness of sins, repentance and a personal relationship with Christ rather than external religious practices.
Kumuyi noted that some Christians mistakenly believe wearing a headscarf during prayer or avoiding jewellery automatically makes them holy. “Some think not wearing earring is the finality of holiness,” he said, adding that others measure spiritual maturity by the clothes or accessories they do not wear.
The cleric warned that an excessive focus on outward appearance can cause believers to neglect the inward transformation God desires. He encouraged Christians to examine themselves according to Scripture and pursue a life marked by purity of heart, obedience to God’s word and genuine devotion to Christ.
