Former Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), Mike Ejiofor, has warned that terrorist groups could attempt to exploit the recent reduction in United States troop presence, urging security agencies to remain vigilant.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television, Ejiofor reacted to the reported drawdown of US troops following operations that reportedly killed Abu Bilal Halmanuki, identified as the second-in-command of ISIS in the Lake Chad Basin.
“These terrorists look for every opportunity, and when they see a reduction in US troops they may try to exploit it,” Ejiofor said, adding that insurgent groups closely monitor security developments and could view the reduction as an opportunity to launch fresh attacks.
Despite his concerns, Ejiofor said Nigeria has made measurable progress in weakening terrorist groups through sustained military operations. He expressed confidence in the country’s security efforts and suggested the United States could review the situation and increase its troop presence again if necessary.
He also emphasized the importance of intelligence sharing and continued cooperation between Nigeria and its international partners, noting that effective counterterrorism operations depend on coordinated efforts. Ejiofor further urged security agencies to remain alert as the country approaches another election cycle, warning that insurgents may seek to exploit the period to spread fear and undermine public confidence.
