Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has alleged that the Federal Government is working to prevent him from appearing on the ballot for the 2027 presidential election.
According to The Punch on Sunday, June 28, 2026, Obi made the claim while speaking at a leadership forum in Anambra State, following a Federal High Court ruling in Lokoja that set aside an earlier judgment directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register the NDC.
“If you know what they are doing to ensure that I’m not on the ballot in 2027, you will be surprised,” Obi said. He also challenged President Bola Tinubu and other prospective presidential candidates to a public debate, insisting his ambition is driven by a desire to improve governance in Nigeria.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) rejected Obi’s allegations, describing them as unfounded. APC National Secretary Ajibola Basiru urged the former Anambra governor to pursue his legal grievances through the courts rather than implicating the President in an ongoing judicial matter.
“He cannot be seeking to rule Nigeria and be undermining one of the key institutions of democracy,” Basiru said.
