Buhari Adamu, a suspect arrested over alleged involvement in a kidnapping syndicate operating along the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Nasarawa border, has claimed he accidentally shot himself while the gang was negotiating with the families of kidnapped victims.
Speaking during an interview on Arise News on Thursday, July 2, 2026, Adamu said the firearm discharged accidentally during ransom negotiations, leaving him with a gunshot wound.
“We were negotiating when I mistakenly pulled the trigger and shot myself. After that, I don’t know what happened to the hostages,” he said.
His remarks follow police disclosures that one of the suspects sustained a gunshot injury at the gang’s hideout. Authorities are investigating the sequence of events after the shooting, including the fate of the kidnapped victims.
Police stressed that Adamu’s claims have not been independently verified and remain part of the ongoing investigation. Investigators are relying on forensic evidence, witness statements and other findings to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged killings of the hostages and the specific roles played by each suspect.
