Former Department of State Services (DSS) Assistant Director Dennis Amachree has recounted his account of the investigation into the death of former Nigerian Head of State, General Sani Abacha, including what he said a woman present at the time told him during questioning.
According to TheCable on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, Amachree said Abacha died while with a woman at the Aso Rock Guest House in June 1998. He alleged that the woman fled to Lagos after the incident before the DSS directed him to locate and arrest her for interrogation.
“I was instructed by the DSS headquarters to go after her. We traced her to Lagos, arrested her, and brought her to my office for interrogation,” Amachree said.
He recalled that the woman immediately denied responsibility, telling him, “I did not kill him. He died on top of me.”
Amachree said she consistently maintained that Abacha’s death was not caused by any action on her part and later gave what he described as a detailed account of the incident.
Based on her explanation, Amachree said he concluded that Abacha had suffered a heart attack while they were having sex. He added that he reported his findings to DSS headquarters in Abuja, after which the woman was flown back. According to him, nothing she said suggested she was responsible for Abacha’s death.
