Rahmatu Ahmed, wife of kidnapped Niger State Independent Electoral Commission (NSIEC) Permanent Commissioner, Barrister Ahmed Mohammed, says her husband’s health is deteriorating in captivity as the family struggles to meet the kidnappers’ ransom demand.
Speaking in an interview with Trust TV on Saturday, July 4, 2026, Rahmatu said the abductors have continued to hold her husband in the bush while demanding a ransom the family cannot afford.
She disclosed that Barrister Mohammed contacted the family several times earlier in the week, telling them he had become ill and feared he might die in captivity.
“When he called last on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and complained to me that he has not been feeling fine… he asked, ‘Are we going to leave him inside the bush to die?’ I told him no, but we don’t have the money that they are requesting,” she said.
Rahmatu described the family’s ordeal as heartbreaking and appealed to the Niger State Government, security agencies and well-meaning Nigerians to intervene urgently to secure her husband’s release before his condition worsens.
