Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has revealed that he once considered leaving his ministerial position to contest for the Senate and eventually seek the office of Senate President.
Speaking at an event marking the conclusion of the FCT’s 28-day project commissioning, in a video shared by News Central TV, Wike thanked President Bola Tinubu for the opportunity to serve and praised Senate President Godswill Akpabio for his leadership.
Wike recounted a conversation with Akpabio after some people suggested he could return for a second term as FCT minister. He said he responded that he intended instead to contest for the Rivers South-East Senate seat when the opportunity arose, with the ambition of later becoming Senate President.
According to Wike, Akpabio laughed and reminded him that the Senate had adopted a rule requiring anyone seeking the office of Senate President to have served eight consecutive years in the Senate, making his ambition more difficult.
“We were discussing, and when they said, ‘You’re coming back as a second-time minister,’ I said no, that the Senator representing my senatorial district will withdraw when the time comes for change. And then I’m going to run for Senate, and then I will run for Senate President,” Wike said.
