Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has reportedly identified Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa as his top transfer target as he looks to strengthen the club’s goalkeeping department ahead of the new Premier League season.
According to Metro, Alonso concluded that Chelsea need a new first-choice goalkeeper after raising concerns over the performances of Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen.
The Spaniard, who officially began his role as Chelsea manager at the start of July after signing a four-year contract in May, is working with the club’s hierarchy to reshape the squad following the Blues’ 10th-place finish in the Premier League last season.
Chelsea have already signed Italy international Marco Palestra from Atalanta for a reported £47 million and are also preparing to recruit a replacement at left-back following Marc Cucurella’s departure.
However, the report says Alonso believes the goalkeeping position requires immediate reinforcement, with Sanchez’s high-profile errors last season and Jorgensen’s reported desire to leave in search of regular first-team football influencing the club’s plans.
Costa has emerged as Chelsea’s preferred option. The 26-year-old Porto captain impressed for Portugal at the World Cup and had reportedly been admired by Alonso before the tournament.
The Portugal international has earned 48 senior caps and is regarded as one of Europe’s leading goalkeepers.
A move, however, could prove difficult. Porto are reportedly unwilling to accept less than Costa’s €61 million (£51.1 million) release clause, while Chelsea are said to value the goalkeeper at around €40 million (£34 million). Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain are also reported to be monitoring his situation, potentially increasing competition for his signature.
Chelsea had previously explored a move for France goalkeeper Mike Maignan but were unable to complete a deal.
Speaking after his appointment, Alonso said he was excited to become Chelsea manager and expressed confidence in the club’s potential, adding that his objective is to build a successful team while forging a strong connection with the supporters.
Chelsea are scheduled to begin their Premier League campaign on August 24 with a London derby against Fulham.
