Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike says his administration has curtailed wasteful government spending by redirecting public funds from foreign trips and conferences to infrastructure projects.
According to Leadership on Thursday, July 9, 2026, Wike made the remarks during his monthly media chat in Abuja, where he said the reforms have made him unpopular among some civil servants who previously benefited from what he described as unnecessary government expenditure.
He said the FCT Administration is prioritising prudent financial management by shifting resources from recurrent expenses to capital projects, including road construction and other infrastructure that directly benefits residents.
Wike maintained that every request for public funds must be justified by its contribution to governance and development, adding that the era of approving unjustified expenditure has ended.
“We waste our resources on frivolities. You expect me to approve funds for you to go to America for a one-week conference on land administration. What is that?” the minister said.
He acknowledged that the policy may be unpopular with some officials but insisted it is necessary to promote accountability and ensure limited public resources deliver measurable and lasting benefits.
