Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain Chief Dan Ulasi has recounted the suffering of South Easterners returning from northern Nigeria during the civil war, alleging that many arrived with severe injuries after attacks.
Speaking during an interview on Arise TV, Ulasi claimed that many victims were attacked in the Benue-Plateau area while travelling home rather than in the far North.
“You go to the railway station and see people coming out of the train with one hand missing, one eye missing, open wounds. There’s nothing we weren’t seeing,” he said.
Ulasi argued that the traumatic experiences fuelled the anger and declarations made by many people at the time, but stressed that leadership and decision-making should not be driven by anger.
He also welcomed the recent apology by the Plateau State Governor to the Igbo people, describing it as a sincere acknowledgment of history. Ulasi maintained that the Nigerian Civil War was an unnecessary tragedy and urged Nigerians to remember its lessons to ensure such events are never repeated.
