Professor Okey Ikechukwu, Executive Director of Development Specs Academy, has urged political parties to uphold their agreements on the rotation of presidential power between the North and the South ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election.
Speaking during a discussion aired on Channels Television on Monday, July 13, 2026, Ikechukwu argued that respecting such arrangements would promote fairness, inclusion, and public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process.
Commenting on former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s potential participation in the 2027 presidential race, he said, “Atiku should also stay out of it because he is in a party that, on its own, took a decision that there would be a rotation between the North and the South.”
Ikechukwu maintained that political leaders should remain consistent by honoring the decisions made by their parties rather than disregarding them to pursue personal ambitions. He added that adherence to established agreements would help reduce political tension, foster national unity, and reinforce a sense of belonging across the country’s regions.
He also stressed that debates on zoning and power rotation should prioritize fairness for all regions over individual political interests.
