Senator Ali Ndume has called for improved welfare for Nigerian military personnel, arguing that their current remuneration does not reflect the risks they face in combating insecurity.
Speaking during an interview with TrustTV News on June 26, 2026, the Borno South lawmaker also commended President Bola Tinubu for what he described as a fair and transparent approach to the proposed establishment of state police, following the Senate’s passage of the constitutional amendment bill.
Ndume, however, stressed that strengthening national security requires greater investment in the welfare of security personnel.
“The Nigerian Army pays N100,000, which turns out to be $80 per month, and you expect someone to put his life on the line for that,” he said.
The senator argued that soldiers confronting insurgency, banditry and other security threats deserve better salaries and improved conditions of service, maintaining that adequate welfare is essential to boosting morale and enhancing the effectiveness of the armed forces.
